Unlike fiction films, documentaries rarely appeal to the broadest possible audience. Most are watched by viewers who already have a genuine interest in a particular subject โ€” whether it is the lives of remarkable individuals, true crime, sport, music, environmental issues, historical events, social affairs or scientific discoveries. As a result, audience ratings are often shaped by a smaller but far more engaged community, which also influences how these films are perceived.

The documentary landscape itself has also changed significantly in recent years. Whereas the most talked-about documentary stories were once primarily released as feature-length films, they are now increasingly produced as documentary miniseries for streaming platforms. Today, streaming services and major broadcasters such as Netflix, HBO, BBC, Disney+, Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video have become the primary home for ambitious documentary projects exploring nature, history, politics, true crime, sport and science.

At the same time, feature-length documentaries have seen a noticeable rise in concert films and music documentaries. That is why we decided not to limit this list to traditional documentaries alone. Instead, we have brought together the most compelling documentary releases of 2026 across a wide range of categories โ€” from concert films and stories about musicians to major socio-political documentaries and acclaimed festival premieres that are still awaiting a wider theatrical or digital release.

Wild London reveals an unexpected side of the British capital, portraying London as one of Europe's richest urban wildlife habitats. The documentary explores the lives of foxes, badgers, deer, bats, parakeets, birds of prey and hundreds of other species that have adapted to living alongside nearly nine million people. Through stunning cinematography, the film shows how parks, gardens, the River Thames, abandoned industrial sites and even rooftops have become thriving natural ecosystems.

YouTube video thumbnail

Unlike BBC's large-scale wildlife documentaries, which transport audiences to the world's most remote locations, Wild London proves that remarkable stories from the natural world can unfold in the heart of one of the planet's largest cities. More than just a visually striking nature documentary, it serves as a reminder of how closely modern megacities remain connected to the environment. This fresh perspective makes it one of the most compelling wildlife documentaries of 2026.

This is far more than a documentary about mountain gorillas. It is a deeply personal story for David Attenborough (who celebrated his 100th birthday this year), spanning almost half a century. In early 1978, while filming the landmark series Life on Earth, he first encountered a young gorilla named Pablo in the Virunga Mountains. No one could have imagined that the playful infant would one day become the leader of his troop, while Attenborough himself would return to these forests for decades, documenting Pablo's life and the generations that followed. Blending rare archival footage with newly filmed material from Rwanda, the documentary tells not only the story of a single animal but also how this remarkable encounter helped transform humanity's perception of gorillasโ€”from fearsome beasts to highly intelligent and deeply social creatures. It stands among the most personal and moving works of Attenborough's extraordinary career.

YouTube video thumbnail

Rather than attempting to cover an entire ecosystem, the film focuses entirely on one story. That intimate approach becomes its greatest strength, allowing viewers to better understand the complex social lives of gorillas and the challenges involved in protecting them. At the same time, it serves as another reminder of why David Attenborough remains one of the world's greatest storytellers about nature, capable of turning the history of a single gorilla family into an unforgettable documentary.

The film currently has just 253 ratings on IMDb, meaning its score is not yet truly representative.

The film tells the story of the events of May 2021, when hundreds of residents of Glasgow's Pollokshields neighbourhood took to the streets to prevent immigration officers from detaining two of their neighbours. What began as a local protest quickly became one of the most remarkable examples of community solidarity in modern Britain.

YouTube video thumbnail

Rather than focusing on political debate or immigration statistics, the filmmakers centre the story on ordinary people, mutual support and the strength of a local community that refused to stand aside. The documentary is a powerful reminder that meaningful change can sometimes begin on a single street.

Miracle: The Boys of '80 takes viewers back to the legendary "Miracle on Ice" โ€” Team USA's stunning victory over the seemingly unbeatable Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Olympics. Blending archival footage with contemporary interviews and first-hand recollections, the documentary recreates not only the famous game itself but also the Cold War atmosphere that gave the triumph far greater symbolic significance. For millions of Americans, it became proof that belief, teamwork and determination could overcome even the most dominant opponent.

YouTube video thumbnail

More than four decades later, the "Miracle on Ice" is still regarded as one of the greatest sporting moments of the 20th century. It has already inspired both feature films and documentaries, yet Miracle: The Boys of '80 offers a contemporary perspective on a story that long ago transcended hockey to become part of American cultural identity. Even though the result of the game is no longer a secret, its emotional impact remains as powerful as ever.

The documentary celebrates the life and career of legendary American comedian and actor Martin Short, whose distinctive humour and unforgettable performances have left a lasting mark on North American entertainment for decades. Through archival footage, interviews with friends, colleagues and fellow comedians, the film traces his journey from television sketch comedy and blockbuster films to becoming one of the most beloved figures in modern comedy. More than a conventional career retrospective, it is also a reflection on the fleeting nature of life, creativity and the legacy an artist leaves behind.

Blending humour, self-deprecating wit and deeply personal memories, the filmmakers create a portrait that resonates equally with longtime admirers of Martin Short and with viewers discovering his remarkable career for the first time.

Queen of Chess tells the story of Judit Polgรกr, widely regarded as the greatest female chess player of all time and the woman who forever changed perceptions of women's place in professional chess. For more than 26 consecutive years, she remained the world's highest-rated female player, became the only woman ever to break into the FIDE top ten, surpassed the 2700 rating mark and competed at the highest level of world championship chess. Through archival footage, contemporary interviews and iconic match footage, the documentary explores not only her extraordinary achievements but also the journey of a player whose fearless, attacking style shattered the long-standing belief that women could not compete with men on equal terms.

YouTube video thumbnail

Director Rory Kennedy skillfully blends a compelling sports story with an intimate biographical portrait, making the film engaging even for viewers with little knowledge of chess. At the same time, several critics have noted that the documentary only briefly touches on the more controversial aspects of Judit Polgรกr's upbringing and the psychological cost of her remarkable success. Even so, Queen of Chess stands out as one of the year's finest documentaries about sport and equality, reminding audiences how a single individual can transform an entire field and redefine what people believe is possible.

The documentary tells the true story of Richard "Beebo" Russell, a 28-year-old Horizon Air ground service agent who, in August 2018, stole a $30-million Bombardier Q400 aircraft and embarked on a nearly 70-minute flight over the Pacific Northwest before the journey ended in tragedy. Through exclusive interviews with Russell's family, friends and colleagues, alongside authentic air traffic control recordings, the film explores why a man almost universally remembered as kind, warm-hearted and full of life carried out an act that stunned the world.

YouTube video thumbnail

Director Patricia E. Gillespie, who spent several years working closely with Russell's family, examines the incident through the lens of mental health, loneliness, workplace burnout and the pressures facing America's working class. Critics have praised the documentary's deeply compassionate approach, arguing that it shifts the conversation beyond aviation security to a broader discussion about a crisis that society too often acknowledges only after tragedy has already struck.

The documentary explores one of the most disturbing criminal cases in modern Texas history. In October 2020, police stopped a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Taylor Parker, who claimed she had just given birth. Medical staff quickly discovered that not only had she never been pregnant, but that a previous hysterectomy had made pregnancy biologically impossible. Investigators soon uncovered the horrifying truth: the newborn had been abducted after the brutal murder of 21-year-old pregnant woman Reagan Simmons-Hancock. Through interviews with family members, investigators and eyewitnesses, the film reconstructs the events leading up to the crime, revealing how months of deception built around a fabricated pregnancy ultimately ended in tragedy.

YouTube video thumbnail

The filmmakers seek to understand how an invented reality gradually came to replace Taylor Parker's real life. In doing so, the documentary raises unsettling questions about manipulation, mental health and the limits of human obsession.

The Best Concert and Music Documentary Films

One of the most interesting trends of 2026 has been the growing number of highly rated concert films and music documentaries. Some place viewers right in the middle of spectacular live performances, while others explore the creative journeys of artists or uncover lesser-known chapters in the history of iconic bands.

Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience takes audiences inside the sold-out concerts of Stray Kids, one of the world's most successful K-pop groups. Formed in 2018, the eight-member band combines spectacular live performances with meticulously choreographed productions and an ever-growing global fanbase. The film blends footage from the group's dominATE World Tour, including their massive performance at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, with behind-the-scenes moments and personal reflections from the members.

YouTube video thumbnail

The dominATE Experience is further proof that concert films have become one of the film industry's most successful and profitable formats. They not only allow fans to relive the excitement of a major live show but also introduce artists to entirely new audiences while boosting music and merchandise sales. This is precisely why more studios continue to invest in such productions, with the global rise of K-pop turning concert films into major international theatrical events. Even viewers unfamiliar with Stray Kids will likely appreciate the film's impressive staging, choreography, cinematography and the sheer scale of its stadium performances.

Noah Kahan: Out of Body is a concert documentary dedicated to one of the most prominent voices of the new generation of American folk-pop. The film combines performances from the We'll All Be Here Forever Tour with behind-the-scenes footage, archive material and Noah Kahan's personal reflections on his rapid rise to fame, songwriting, anxiety and mental health. At its core, the story is about more than music โ€” it is about the person behind it.

YouTube video thumbnail

Unlike many concert films, Out of Body places far greater emphasis on its subject's personal journey. As a result, it becomes more than a beautifully shot live performance, offering an intimate music documentary about an artist who rose from intimate venues to sold-out arenas in just a few years. Even viewers unfamiliar with Noah Kahan's music may appreciate the film's emotional honesty, the atmosphere of its live performances and its thoughtful balance between concert spectacle and personal storytelling.

The concert film takes audiences inside Billie Eilish's Hit Me Hard and Soft World Tour, supporting her third studio album. It combines spectacular live performances with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, offering a closer look at the creative process, tour preparations and the life of one of today's most influential pop artists. At its heart, the film explores not only the music itself, but also the emotional vulnerability woven throughout both the album and the live performances.

YouTube video thumbnail

Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft is far more than a straightforward concert recording. Shot for a 3D theatrical release, using highly mobile cameras and carefully designed staging, it immerses viewers in the centre of the performance while revealing the scale of the arena production and the work behind the scenes. The energy of thousands of fans and Billie Eilish's magnetic stage presence elevate the film beyond a concert experience, capturing the phenomenon of one of the defining pop artists of her generation, for whom cinema becomes a powerful tool to amplify the emotional impact of music.

The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel

The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel is less a story about the rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers than it is about the man without whom the band might never have become what it is today. The documentary pays tribute to founding guitarist Hillel Slovak, whose distinctive playing shaped the band's early sound before his tragic death from a heroin overdose in 1988 at the age of 26. Through archival footage, home videos and interviews with Anthony Kiedis, Flea, John Frusciante and those who knew Slovak personally, the film recreates the spirit of 1980s Los Angeles, the band's formative years and the friendship that laid the foundation for its future success.

YouTube video thumbnail

Critics have praised the documentary for the sincerity of its memories and its deeply emotional portrait of a gifted musician whose influence on the Red Hot Chili Peppers endured long after his death, despite never living to witness the band's global success. At the same time, the surviving members have made it clear that they were not creatively involved in the production, despite appearing in the film. For that reason, Our Brother, Hillel is best viewed as a heartfelt tribute to Hillel Slovak rather than an official history of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition explores the formative years of one of the most influential bands in the history of heavy metal. The documentary traces Iron Maiden's rise from playing small London pubs and clubs in the mid-1970s to the release of the band's self-titled debut album, which marked the beginning of its global success. Through archival footage, rare recordings and interviews with former and current band members, as well as music journalists, the film recreates the atmosphere of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and reveals how Iron Maiden forged the distinctive sound and identity that would redefine the genre.

YouTube video thumbnail

Rather than focusing primarily on live performances, Burning Ambition places greater emphasis on the band's historical journey. The filmmakers examine the constant line-up changes, the struggles of the early years, Steve Harris's pivotal role in shaping Iron Maiden's creative vision and the legacy of original frontman Paul Di'Anno, who passed away shortly before the documentary's release. As a result, the film serves not only as a chronicle of the band's origins but also as a heartfelt tribute to the people who laid the foundations for Iron Maiden's enduring success. For fans of classic heavy metal, it stands among the most compelling music documentaries of the year.

Documentary Films from the Festival Circuit Worth Waiting For

Many of the year's finest documentaries begin their journey at festivals such as Sundance, CPH:DOX, True/False, Sheffield DocFest, Hot Docs and many others. After premiering, some spend months without receiving a digital release or international distribution. As a result, they have so far been seen only by critics, festival juries and attendees. Nevertheless, several of these films are already emerging as potential contenders for the upcoming awards season.

At the time of publication, most of the films listed below have yet to receive a wide digital release or a physical Blu-ray or DVD edition. For now, they remain accessible primarily to festival audiences and members of the press.

The filmmakers follow the coming-of-age journey of a Syrian girl named Israa over the course of ten years. They first begin filming her at the age of eleven, as her family prepares to flee the war-torn city of Aleppo and embark on a dangerous journey to Europe. Before the audience's eyes, she grows from a child into a young woman, experiencing displacement, life as a refugee in Germany, first love, disappointment and, ultimately, a return to Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. Blending archival footage with contemporary filmmaking, the documentary tells not only the story of one family but also that of an entire generation whose lives were irrevocably shaped by war.

YouTube video thumbnail

Critics have praised the film's greatest strength: its patient, almost invisible observation of its subjects. Rather than imposing their own conclusions, the directors allow the story to unfold naturally through everyday life, family relationships and the difficult choices that come with rebuilding a life in exile. This honesty earned the documentary two of the top honours in Sundance's World Cinema Documentary competition โ€” the Directing Award and the Audience Award. Widely described as neither a political manifesto nor a conventional war documentary, it is instead a deeply human story about growing up, losing one's home and searching for a place to belong. Where can you watch it? Nowhere for the time being โ€” the film is currently screening exclusively at film festivals.

The film has received just 50 ratings on IMDb and 437 on Letterboxd, meaning its current scores are still too early to be considered fully representative.

Soul Patrol uncovers a little-known chapter of American military history, telling the story of the U.S. Army's first special reconnaissance unit composed entirely of Black soldiers during the Vietnam War. More than half a century later, the surviving veterans reunite to speak openly for the first time about their combat missions, the racial discrimination they endured within their own military and the psychological scars that continued to shape their lives long after the war had ended.

YouTube video thumbnail

Critics have particularly praised J.M. Harper's restrained and compassionate approach, which avoids turning the documentary into a conventional war chronicle. Instead, it delivers a deeply personal portrait of men for whom the war never truly ended. Soul Patrol won the U.S. Documentary Directing Award at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and was also nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. Many American critics have already described it as one of the year's finest documentaries on war and historical memory, emphasising that, above all, it is a story about human dignity, brotherhood and finally giving a voice to people whose experiences remained unheard for far too long.

Kikuyu Land explores one of the most enduring legacies of British colonial rule in Kenya โ€” land taken from the Kikuyu people more than a century ago. Today, much of that territory is owned by major multinational corporations, including Unilever, while many local communities continue to live in poverty, endure harsh working conditions and fight to reclaim their ancestral land. As journalist Bea Wangondu investigates the roots of this historical injustice, she unexpectedly uncovers long-buried secrets within her own family, transforming the documentary from an investigative report into a deeply personal story about memory, identity and Kenya's colonial past.

YouTube video thumbnail

Rather than offering simplistic political conclusions, the filmmakers allow those most directly affected by the story to speak for themselves. Through its patient observation of ordinary people, the documentary becomes not only an examination of Kenya's colonial legacy but also a universal reflection on how historical injustice continues to shape the present, turning the struggle for land into a struggle for memory, dignity and identity. Like many festival premieres, the film is currently available primarily through international film festivals and has yet to receive a wide public release.

The documentary takes viewers to the remote Canadian town of Churchill, widely known as the "Polar Bear Capital of the World." It follows a young polar bear forced to venture into human territory as rapidly melting Arctic sea ice continues to shrink its natural habitat. To tourists, the animal is a breathtaking attraction; to wildlife authorities, it is a "nuisance bear" to be deterred or relocated; and to the local Inuit community, it is a powerful reminder of how climate change is disrupting the fragile balance between people and wildlife.

YouTube video thumbnail

Following the success of their 2021 short film of the same name, directors Gabriela Osio Vanden and Jack Weisman expanded the story into a feature-length documentary. Critics have particularly praised its breathtaking cinematography and immersive sound design.

The Biggest Disappointment of the Year

Many critics and viewers criticised the film for its superficial approach, while its audience ratings have become some of the lowest ever recorded for a notable documentary release. The political context surrounding its subject is impossible to ignore, yet even taking that into account, the film stands as a resounding disappointment.

Melania offers a look at 20 days in the life of Melania Trump as she prepares for Donald Trump's second presidential inauguration. After a nearly decade-long absence from directing following the high-profile sexual misconduct scandal that erupted in 2017, Brett Ratner โ€” the filmmaker behind the Rush Hour trilogy, Red Dragon and X-Men: The Last Stand โ€” returns to the director's chair. Ratner takes viewers behind the scenes of the inauguration preparations, capturing planning meetings, private conversations and the day-to-day life of the First Lady of the United States. Yet, despite its nearly two-hour running time, the documentary never answers its central question: who is Melania Trump behind the carefully constructed public image? Rather than offering an intimate portrait, the film settles for a polished observation that rarely moves beyond the official narrative.

YouTube video thumbnail

The documentary has been widely criticised for its superficial approach, its reluctance to ask difficult questions and its failure to present Melania Trump from a fresh perspective. As a result, many critics have described it as being closer to a polished promotional film โ€” or even political advertising โ€” than to a genuinely probing documentary. At the same time, audience reactions have been sharply divided, once again demonstrating how strongly political context can shape the reception of projects like this. That said, the film does feature an effective musical score, while a Carpool Karaoke-style sequence with Melania Trump stands out as one of the documentary's few genuinely lively and memorable moments.
