One of the most anticipated fantasy series, Eragon, is finally gaining momentum. Disney+ is preparing a large-scale adaptation of Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle — and this time, fans have every reason to expect a faithful and достойна version of the story.

📚 From self-publishing to global bestseller
Christopher Paolini wrote Eragon as a teenager and self-published it in 2002. A year later, it was picked up by Alfred A. Knopf and became a The New York Times bestseller in the children’s category, where it remained for 121 consecutive weeks.
The story quickly expanded into the full Inheritance Cycle: Eldest (2005), Brisingr (2008) and Inheritance (2011). (Editor’s note: the final novel shares its title with the entire saga.)
The series follows Eragon, an ordinary fifteen-year-old who discovers a mysterious stone in the mountains — which turns out to be a dragon egg. When Saphira hatches, his life changes forever. He becomes the first Dragon Rider in a century, learns ancient magic, and faces the tyrant king Galbatorix, who rules Alagaësia through fear.
🎬 The failed 2006 adaptation
In 2006, 20th Century Fox released a feature film adaptation of Eragon, starring Ed Speleers. The cast also included Rachel Weisz (voice of Saphira), Jeremy Irons (Brom), Garrett Hedlund (Murtagh), Robert Carlyle (Durza) and John Malkovich (King Galbatorix).
Despite earning around $249 million worldwide, the film was heavily criticised, and plans for a franchise collapsed.
🔄 A revival: Disney+ takes over
After years of silence, Eragon is getting a second шанс — this time as a series. Disney+ is officially developing a new live-action adaptation, aiming to reimagine the story and, crucially, fix the mistakes of the 2006 film.
The project is currently in development — an active phase where scripts are being written, the season structure is taking shape, and concept art is being created. According to Paolini, this stage has already lasted around two years, with the team now close to moving into full production.
Disney’s key requirement is a strong pilot. Paolini has been working on it alongside showrunner Todd Harthan — refining the balance between staying true to the books and adapting the story for television.
🎥 Who’s behind the series
The project is backed by a strong creative team — a promising sign.
- Todd Harthan serves as co-creator and showrunner, known for Psych (2006–2014) and High Potential (2024).
- Todd Helbing joins as co-showrunner (The Flash, 2014–2023; Superman & Lois, 2021–2024), bringing experience with large-scale franchises.
- Christopher Paolini is directly involved as co-creator and executive producer.
- Kerry Williamson is among the writers and is also working on the upcoming Highlander reboot with Henry Cavill.
Additionally, Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man, 2012) is attached as an executive producer — another sign of Disney’s serious commitment to the project.
🐉 What to expect from the adaptation
The biggest difference from the film is the format. What once had to be compressed into a single movie can now unfold across a full season — or several. That means more room for character development, deeper world-building, and a richer exploration of Alagaësia’s politics, magic and lore.
Most importantly, it allows for a coherent narrative for Eragon and Saphira without the sense that key moments are being cut.
Paolini has been clear that changes are inevitable — a normal part of any adaptation. His main goal, however, is to preserve the spirit of the books.
Disney will likely aim to appeal to both new audiences and longtime fans. I fall into the latter. I first read Eragon as a teenager — and what stood out most was how detailed and immersive the world felt.
A magic system with strict rules and real consequences, where spells carry a cost — sometimes lethal. An original elven language created from scratch. A richly mapped world, from dwarf cities beneath mountains to elven forests. And layered political tensions between races, each with their own history and motives.
Alagaësia felt alive — and grew more complex with each book.
What begins as a classic adventure gradually evolves into something far more масштабне. That escalation is exactly what made the books so compelling.
That’s why the series must avoid oversimplifying this world or flattening its tension. If Disney gets it right, this could finally be the adaptation fans have been waiting for.
